Use the formula: IV Rate (mL/hr) = (60 × Desired Dose × Weight × Bag Volume) ÷ (1000 × Drug Amount). This accounts for converting minutes to hours and micrograms to milligrams.
Macrodrip tubing typically delivers 10-20 drops per mL and is used for standard adult infusions. Microdrip tubing delivers 60 drops per mL and provides more precise control for pediatric patients or when exact flow rates are critical.
Use the formula: gtt/min = (mL/hr × drop factor) ÷ 60. For microdrip tubing (60 gtt/mL), the mL/hr equals gtt/min directly.
Always double-check calculations independently, verify the drug concentration, confirm patient weight, and follow facility protocols. When in doubt, consult with a pharmacist or physician.
Monitor IV rates frequently according to facility policy and patient condition. Check the actual drip rate by counting drops and compare to the calculated rate. Adjust as needed and document changes.
This calculator is designed for continuous weight-based infusions. Always verify that the medication is appropriate for continuous infusion and follow specific drug administration guidelines.
