How is the Farm Biodiversity Score calculated?
The score is calculated across four pillars: Crop Diversity (up to 25 points), Soil Health (up to 25 points), Habitat & Connectivity (up to 30 points), and Farming System practices (up to 20 points). Each pillar rewards practices known to support on-farm biodiversity, such as crop rotation, reduced pesticide use, hedgerows, and wetland retention. The total gives you a score out of 100. What is a good biodiversity score for a farm?
Scores above 70 indicate strong biodiversity management with a diverse, habitat-rich farm. Scores between 45 and 70 suggest a moderately biodiverse farm with clear areas for improvement. Scores below 45 indicate significant biodiversity pressure, often from intensive practices, low habitat cover, or monoculture cropping.
Why does tillage practice affect biodiversity?
Tillage physically disturbs soil ecosystems, killing invertebrates, fungi, and beneficial microbes. Conventional deep ploughing has a much greater negative impact than no-till or conservation tillage, which preserve soil structure and the organisms that live within it. These organisms are foundational to the food web supporting birds, mammals, and insects.
Does farm size affect the biodiversity score?
Farm size itself does not directly raise or lower your score, but it provides context — larger farms may have greater total biodiversity potential, while the practices you apply determine the score. The calculator focuses on the proportion and quality of management rather than absolute area.
Can organic or low-input farms still score poorly?
Yes. A farm with no synthetic inputs but also no habitat features, poor crop diversity, and intensive livestock management can still receive a moderate-to-low score. Biodiversity depends on the combined effect of all practices — chemical inputs are just one factor among many.

The highest-impact improvements typically involve adding or restoring hedgerows and woodland, increasing crop rotation complexity, adopting no-till or conservation tillage, reducing synthetic pesticide use, and creating or maintaining wetlands and buffer strips.
