How is the semester end date calculated?

The semester end date is determined by adding the total number of semester weeks (multiplied by 7 days) to the start date, then adding any break days. For example, a 16-week semester starting August 25 with a 5-day spring break ends approximately in mid-December. The finals period falls within those final days before the end date.

How do US federal holidays affect academic calendar dates?

When you select 'Exclude US Federal Holidays,' the calculator shifts deadlines that fall on federal holidays (like Labor Day, Thanksgiving, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day) to the next available business day. This is important for registration and withdrawal deadlines that depend on administrative office availability.

What is the last day to withdraw without academic penalty?

Most colleges set a withdrawal deadline around the 60–70% point of the semester — typically weeks 10–11 of a 16-week term. Withdrawing before this date usually results in a 'W' on your transcript with no GPA impact. After this date, students may receive a 'WF' (Withdrawal Failing) which can negatively affect GPA. How long is a typical finals period?

Most semester-based institutions schedule a finals period of 5 to 7 calendar days (one full week), usually beginning the Monday after the last day of regular classes. Quarter-system schools may have shorter finals periods of 3–5 days. Summer sessions often condense finals into 2–3 days.

What is the difference between a semester, quarter, and summer session?
