What is a Continuing Education Unit (CEU)?

A Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a standardized measure of non-credit education and training. It was created in 1970 by IACET and the U.S. Department of Education. What is the formula used to calculate CEUs?

The standard formula is: CEU = Total Contact Hours ÷ 10. For example, if you completed 15 hours of professional training, you earn 1.5 CEUs. If your time is in minutes, first divide by 60 to get hours, then divide by 10.

How many contact hours equal 1 CEU?

Exactly 10 contact hours equal 1 CEU. So 5 hours = 0.5 CEUs, 20 hours = 2.0 CEUs, and so on. This ratio is the universal standard established by IACET.

What counts as a 'contact hour' for CEU purposes?

A contact hour is one hour (60 minutes) of scheduled instruction, training, or supervised learning time in an organized educational experience. Breaks, meals, and unstructured time are typically not counted.

Why do professionals need CEUs?

Many professions — including nursing, teaching, engineering, and social work — require practitioners to earn a certain number of CEUs per renewal period to maintain their license or certification. CEUs ensure professionals stay current with evolving knowledge and standards in their field.

Are CEUs the same as PDUs or CLEs?

Not exactly, though they are all forms of professional development credit. PDUs (Professional Development Units) are used by PMI for project management certifications, and CLEs (Continuing Legal Education credits) are used for attorneys. Each profession may use its own unit, but CEU is the most broadly recognized standard across industries.

Can I calculate CEUs for multiple courses at once?
