Frequently Asked Questions

What is the formula used to calculate the required final exam grade?

The formula is: Required Final Score = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 70%, your target is 80%, and the final is worth 50%, you need a 90% on the final. This is a standard weighted-average formula used by most grade calculators.

What if the required grade comes out above 100%?

A result above 100% means it is mathematically impossible to reach your target grade through the final exam alone, unless your course offers extra credit. In that case, you may want to lower your target grade or check whether any other assignments can still be improved.

Can I use this calculator for any course or subject?

Yes — as long as you know your current grade, the grade you want to finish with, and how much the final exam counts toward your total grade, this calculator works for any course: math, science, English, history, and more.

What counts as the "current grade" I should enter?

Your current grade is your overall course average based on all graded work completed so far — excluding the final exam. Check your course portal or gradebook for this number. Enter it as a percentage (e.g., 85 for 85%).

What if my final exam counts as a test grade, not a separate weighted category?

If your final counts as one of several equally weighted tests, you'll need to factor that in differently. Treat the final as one test out of the total number of tests and calculate its weight accordingly. For example, if there are 5 equally weighted tests and the final is one of them, the final weight is 20%.

How do letter grades convert to percentages?

Standard letter-grade conversions are: A+ = 97–100%, A = 93–96%, A− = 90–92%, B+ = 87–89%, B = 83–86%, B− = 80–82%, C+ = 77–79%, C = 73–76%, C− = 70–72%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%. These can vary slightly by institution, so always confirm with your syllabus.

Does the final exam weight affect how hard it is to change my grade?

Absolutely. The higher the final exam weight, the more power it has to raise — or lower — your course grade. A final worth 50% of your grade gives you far more opportunity to recover from a low current grade than a final worth only 10%.

What if I already took the final and want to know my overall course grade?

This calculator is designed to predict what you need before your final. To calculate your overall course grade after taking the final, use the formula: Overall Grade = Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight) + Final Score × Final Weight. For example: 82% × 0.70 + 91% × 0.30 = 84.7%.
