Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Grading Scale Chart Generator work?

Enter the total number of questions on your test. The tool calculates the percentage score for every possible number of wrong answers (from 0 up to the total) and assigns a letter grade based on your chosen grading scale. The full reference chart is displayed in a printable table so you can grade papers quickly without a calculator.

What grading scales are supported?

The generator offers three options: a Standard scale (A=90%+, B=80%+, C=70%+, D=60%+), a Plus/Minus scale with finer grade bands (A=93%, A-=90%, B+=87%, etc.), and a fully Custom mode where you set each threshold yourself to match your school or district policy.

What does 'Allow Half-Point Scoring' mean?

When enabled, the chart includes 0.5-increment wrong-answer rows (e.g., 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5…). This is useful for tests where partial credit is given — for instance, a student can lose half a point for an incomplete answer rather than a full point for a wrong one.

How many questions can I use with this tool?

The generator supports tests with 1 to 500 questions. Whether you have a 10-question pop quiz or a 200-question standardized exam, the chart scales automatically to cover every possible score.

Can I print the grading chart?

Yes. Once the chart is generated, you can use your browser's print function (Ctrl+P or Cmd+P) to print a clean reference sheet. The table is formatted to be print-friendly so teachers can keep a physical copy at their desk during grading sessions.

What is the difference between this and a standard grade calculator?

A standard grade calculator tells you the score for one specific number of wrong answers. This tool generates the entire grading scale at once — every possible wrong-answer count mapped to a percentage and letter grade — so you can grade an entire stack of tests without re-entering values each time.

How is the percentage score calculated?

The percentage is calculated as (Total Questions − Number Wrong) ÷ Total Questions × 100. For example, on a 25-question test with 3 wrong: (25 − 3) ÷ 25 × 100 = 88%, which earns a B under the standard scale.

Can I customize letter grade thresholds for my school's policy?

Absolutely. Select 'Custom Thresholds' from the Grading Scale dropdown, then enter the minimum percentage required for each letter grade (A, B, C, and D). Any score below your D threshold will automatically be marked as an F.
