Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a test grade percentage?

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, if a student gets 17 correct out of 20, the score is (17 ÷ 20) × 100 = 85%. This generator does that math automatically for every possible number of wrong answers.

What is a standard grading scale?

The most common U.S. grading scale assigns letter grades based on percentage ranges: A (90–100%), B (80–89%), C (70–79%), D (60–69%), and F (below 60%). Many schools also use a plus/minus system that adds finer distinctions like A-, B+, and so on.

Is 27 out of 40 a passing grade?

Yes — 27 out of 40 equals 67.5%, which is above the typical 60% passing threshold and would earn a D on a standard scale. Under a stricter 70% passing requirement it would be considered failing. Use this generator with 40 total questions to see the full scale.

What grade is 7 wrong out of 40?

Getting 7 wrong out of 40 means 33 correct, which is 82.5% — a solid B on a standard scale. Enter 40 in the Total Questions field and 7 in the Number Wrong field to see this highlighted in the chart.

Is 75 out of 80 an A?

Yes — 75 out of 80 is 93.75%, which falls in the A range (90%+) on a standard grading scale. It may qualify as an A- under a plus/minus scale depending on the threshold your school uses.

Can I set my own grading thresholds?

Absolutely. Select 'Custom Thresholds' in the Grading Scale Style dropdown, then enter your own minimum percentages for A, B, C, and D grades. The generator rebuilds the entire chart based on your cutoffs — useful for curved exams or non-standard rubrics.

What is an EZ Grader and how does this replace it?

An EZ Grader is a physical sliding card tool teachers use to quickly convert number wrong into a percentage score. This generator creates the same chart digitally for any number of questions, with the added ability to customize grade boundaries and switch between grading scale styles.

How does the plus/minus grading scale work?

A plus/minus scale splits each letter grade into three bands. For example, A+ is 97–100%, A is 93–96%, and A- is 90–92%. Select 'Plus/Minus' in the Grading Scale Style dropdown to see the full breakdown applied to your specific number of questions.
