Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'day of the year' mean?

The day of the year (also called the ordinal date) is a number that tells you how many days have passed since January 1st, including that day itself. January 1 is Day 1, February 1 is Day 32, and December 31 is Day 365 (or Day 366 in a leap year).

How many days are there in a year? How many days are in a leap year?

A standard year has 365 days. A leap year has 366 days, with the extra day added as February 29. Leap years occur every 4 years, except for century years not divisible by 400 (e.g., 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not).

How do I calculate what day of the year it is out of 365?

Add up the number of days in each month that has fully passed, then add the day number of the current month. For example, March 16 = 31 (Jan) + 28 (Feb) + 16 = Day 75 in a non-leap year. Our calculator does this automatically for any date you enter.

What day of the year is today?

Simply open the calculator and it will pre-fill today's date for you, immediately showing the current day number, days remaining, and more. You can also manually enter any past or future date.

How do I calculate the number of days left in the year?

Subtract the current day number from the total number of days in the year. For example, if today is Day 75 and the year has 365 days, there are 365 − 75 = 290 days remaining. The calculator shows this automatically.

What is a leap year and how does it affect the day number?

A leap year adds an extra day (February 29) to the calendar, making it 366 days long. Any date from March 1 onward will have a day number one higher in a leap year than in a regular year. The calculator automatically detects whether the selected year is a leap year.

When is someone born on February 29?

People born on February 29 (a leap day) only have an exact birthday every 4 years. In non-leap years, they typically celebrate on either February 28 or March 1. February 29 corresponds to Day 60 in a leap year.

Can I use this calculator for any year, not just the current one?

Yes — you can enter any date, past or future, and the calculator will correctly determine the day number for that specific year, accounting for leap years and the exact month lengths.
