The calculator takes your available fuel quantity and your vehicle's fuel efficiency to determine how far you can travel. It converts all units to a common base internally, calculates the distance, then converts the result back to your chosen unit. Miles per gallon (mpg) measures how many miles you travel per gallon of fuel — higher is better. Liters per 100 km (L/100km) measures how many liters are consumed per 100 kilometers — lower is better. Kilometers per liter (km/L) measures how many kilometers you travel per liter of fuel — higher is better. All three describe the same thing from different perspectives.
To convert L/100km to mpg, use the formula: mpg = 235.214 ÷ (L/100km). For example, a car rated at 7 L/100km is equivalent to approximately 33.6 mpg. This calculator handles the conversion automatically when you select your efficiency unit.
Driving speed, road conditions, terrain (hills vs. flat roads), air conditioning use, tyre pressure, vehicle load, and driving style all significantly affect real fuel consumption. Manufacturer fuel efficiency ratings are typically measured under ideal lab conditions, so real-world range may differ by 10–20%.
For mpg: multiply your gallons by the mpg rating (e.g. 12 gallons × 30 mpg = 360 miles). For km/L: multiply liters by the km/L value. For L/100km: divide your liters by the L/100km figure and then multiply by 100 (e.g. 40 liters ÷ 7 L/100km × 100 = 571 km).

Your vehicle's fuel tank capacity is listed in the owner's manual or on the manufacturer's website. Most passenger cars hold between 10–18 US gallons (38–68 liters). SUVs and trucks typically have larger tanks of 20–36 gallons (76–136 liters). You can enter your full tank capacity to estimate your maximum range.
In the US, the average new car achieves about 25–30 mpg combined. Fuel-efficient compact cars and hybrids can achieve 40–60 mpg, while trucks and larger SUVs may get 15–22 mpg. In metric terms, a good efficiency is around 6–8 L/100km (35–47 mpg). Electric vehicle range is measured differently in miles or km per charge.
