Military time is a timekeeping system based on the 24-hour clock, where the day runs from midnight (0000) to 2359. For AM hours, remove the colon and add a leading zero if needed (e.g. 9:30 AM → 0930). For PM hours, remove the colon and add 12 to the hour (e.g. 2:30 PM → 1430). The special cases are 12:00 AM midnight (→ 0000) and 12:00 PM noon (→ 1200).
If the military hour is 0000–0059, subtract 12 hours to get 12-hour AM time (e.g. 0030 → 12:30 AM). For 0100–1159, it maps directly as AM. For 1200–1259 it is PM. For 1300–2359, subtract 12 from the hour to get PM time (e.g. 1830 → 6:30 PM).
Midnight is represented as 0000 (or sometimes 2400 to indicate the end of a day) in military time. When converting 12:00 AM, the result is 0000. You might also find our use the Hours and Minutes Calculator useful.
Noon (12:00 PM) is 1200 in military time. Because noon is already 12 hours into the day, no addition or subtraction is needed.
Written military time typically does not use a colon — times are expressed as four digits (e.g. 1430). However, the 24-hour clock used internationally often does include a colon (e.g. 14:30). Both refer to the same time.
They refer to the same concept — counting hours from 0 to 23. Military time is typically written without a colon and spoken with the word 'hundred' (e.g. '14 hundred hours'). The civilian 24-hour clock usually includes a colon and is common in Europe and on digital clocks worldwide.
