How does the Reading Challenge Calculator work?
The calculator multiplies your daily reading time by your reading speed (in words per minute) to find how many words you read each day. It then divides the total words in an average book (pages × words per page) by your daily word count to determine how many days each book takes. Finally, it divides your total available reading days by days-per-book to give your projected books completed. See also our Reading Time Calculator.
How much should I read a day to complete 52 books in a year?
At an average reading speed of 250 wpm with books of 300 pages (75,000 words), you need to read about 205 minutes (roughly 3.4 hours) per day to hit 52 books — or about 30 minutes a day if your books average 80 pages. The key variables are your speed, book length, and how consistently you read every day. Use the calculator to experiment with different inputs and find a sustainable daily target.
How long does it take to read 30 pages?
At 250 words per minute and 250 words per page, 30 pages = 7,500 words, which takes about 30 minutes. If your reading speed is faster (say 350 wpm) it drops to around 21 minutes. Use the reading speed and words-per-page fields to get a personalized estimate.
What is an average reading speed?
Most adults read between 200 and 300 words per minute for recreational fiction. Technical or dense non-fiction is often read more slowly, around 150–200 wpm, while speed readers can exceed 500 wpm. The commonly used default is 250 wpm, which is a solid middle-ground estimate. You might also find our GWAM (Gross Words Per Minute) — GWAM (Typing Speed) useful.
How many words are in an average book?
A typical adult novel runs between 70,000 and 100,000 words. With 300 pages and 250 words per page, that's 75,000 words — a reasonable default. Non-fiction books vary widely, from short 40,000-word reads to dense 120,000-word volumes. Adjust the pages and words-per-page fields to match your reading list.
How long will it take me to read The Great Gatsby?
The Great Gatsby has approximately 47,000 words (about 180 pages). At 250 wpm, that's around 3.1 hours of reading time. At 30 minutes of reading per day, you'd finish it in about 6 days. Enter 180 pages into the calculator to see your personalised estimate.
Can I use this for a library holiday reading plan?
Absolutely. Set the challenge duration to the number of days you'll be away (e.g. 14 for two weeks), enter your daily reading time and preferred book length, and the calculator will tell you how many books to borrow and how many pages you'll get through each day. It helps you avoid packing too few — or too many — books.
Does it matter how many days a week I read?
Yes — the 'Days You Read per Week' field adjusts your total active reading days within the challenge period. If you only read on weekdays, your effective reading days drop significantly, reducing the number of books you can complete. The calculator accounts for this so your estimate reflects reality, not an ideal scenario.
