Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my Navy PRT score?

Your Navy PRT score is the average of the points earned in three events: forearm plank, push-ups, and your chosen cardio event. Each event is scored on a 0–100+ scale based on your age group and gender. The overall category (Outstanding, Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, or Probationary) is determined by your average points and whether any single event falls below the minimum passing threshold. See also our use the Lifting Strength Calculator.

What are the Navy PRT performance categories?

The five categories are: Outstanding (≥90 points average), Excellent (75–89.9), Good (60–74.9), Satisfactory (45–59.9), and Probationary (<45 or failing any single event). Sailors must pass all three events to avoid a Probationary designation regardless of their overall average.

What changed in Navy PRT in June 2021?

In June 2021, the U.S. Navy replaced the sit-up event with the forearm plank. The plank is considered a safer, more functional measure of core endurance. Scoring tables were also updated at that time to reflect the new standards across all age groups and genders.

What cardio options are approved for the Navy PRT?

Approved cardio options are the 1.5-mile run, 500-yard swim, 450-meter swim, 12-minute stationary bike (calories), and the 2-kilometer row. Only Life Fitness stationary bikes are approved for the official bike cardio option. Sailors choose one event per test cycle. You might also find our Olympic Lift Max Calculator useful.

How many calories do I need to burn to pass the Navy PRT bike test?

The passing threshold varies by age group and gender. For example, a male aged 20–24 generally needs to burn roughly 40+ Cal/BW (calories per pound of body weight) to score in the Satisfactory range. The bike calorie score is converted to an equivalent run time for official scoring purposes.

What is the maximum age for the Navy PRT test?

There is no maximum age for active-duty Navy PRT participation. Standards adjust for each age bracket, with the oldest category covering sailors aged 60 and above. Standards become progressively less demanding as age increases, acknowledging physiological changes.

Do cool-down calories count toward my bike score?

No. Only the calories displayed on the bike screen at the end of the 12-minute active test period count toward your score. Any calories accumulated during the cool-down phase after the timer ends are not included in your official result.

Can I use any stationary bike for the Navy PRT?

No. Only approved Life Fitness stationary bikes may be used for official Navy PRT testing. The calorie algorithm is calibrated specifically for those machines. Using another brand or model would produce inaccurate results and is not permitted for official scoring.
