Limited Slip Differential Preload Calculator

Preload is the initial clamping force applied to the clutch pack when the differential is at rest. It determines how much torque is required to overcome the static friction and allow the differential to slip.

Breakaway torque is measured by holding one output shaft stationary and applying torque to the other until it begins to rotate. Use a torque wrench and universal measuring tool for accurate readings.

Steel-on-steel clutch plates typically have a friction coefficient of 0.10-0.15. Carbon fiber plates range from 0.12-0.18, while paper-based materials are around 0.08-0.12.

The torque coefficient (K-factor) accounts for friction in the threads and under the bolt head. It varies from 0.10-0.30 depending on lubrication, thread condition, and material. Accurate values ensure proper preload.

Most limited slip differentials work best with 70-80% preload. Lower values reduce locking force, while higher values can cause excessive wear and harsh engagement.

Check preload after initial break-in (500 miles), then every 10,000-15,000 miles or when you notice changes in differential behavior. Racing applications may require more frequent checks.

Some LSDs allow external preload adjustment through threaded rings or shims. Others require disassembly to add or remove clutch plates or change spring stack height.
