For standard rectangular windows, 10-15% waste is typical. For complex shapes, multiple panes, or difficult installations, use 15-20% to ensure you have enough material for trimming and potential errors.
VLT (Visible Light Transmission) represents the percentage of visible light that passes through the window. A lower VLT means darker tint - 5% is very dark, while 70% is light tint.
Final VLT = (Window Tint VLT × Original Glass VLT) ÷ 100. For example, 35% tint on 88% factory glass results in (35 × 88) ÷ 100 = 30.8% final VLT.
Measure only the glass area, not the frame or trim. Add 1-2 inches to both width and height for overlap and trimming during installation.
20% tint is significantly darker than 35%. While 35% provides good privacy and heat reduction with decent visibility, 20% offers maximum privacy but may affect night driving visibility.
While technically possible, layering tints can create uneven appearance and may violate local tint laws. It's better to choose the correct tint percentage initially rather than layering films.
Use a VLT meter to measure current tint levels, or check with the installer for original specifications. Many states require tint shops to provide documentation of VLT percentages.
