How is the Farm Biodiversity Score calculated?

The score is calculated across four pillars: Crop Diversity (up to 25 points), Soil Health (up to 25 points), Habitat & Connectivity (up to 30 points), and Farming System practices (up to 20 points). Each pillar rewards practices known to support on-farm biodiversity, such as crop rotation, reduced pesticide use, hedgerows, and wetland retention. The total gives you a score out of 100.

What is a good biodiversity score for a farm?

Scores above 70 indicate strong biodiversity management with a diverse, habitat-rich farm. Scores between 45 and 70 suggest a moderately biodiverse farm with clear areas for improvement. Scores below 45 indicate significant biodiversity pressure, often from intensive practices, low habitat cover, or monoculture cropping.

Why does tillage practice affect biodiversity?

Tillage physically disturbs soil ecosystems, killing invertebrates, fungi, and beneficial microbes. Conventional deep ploughing has a much greater negative impact than no-till or conservation tillage, which preserve soil structure and the organisms that live within it.
