Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Academic Index (AI)?

The Academic Index is a numeric score, typically ranging from about 60 to 240, that Ivy League schools use to evaluate the academic qualifications of recruited athletes. It combines a student's GPA/class rank and standardized test scores into a single number so coaches and admissions offices can quickly assess academic eligibility.

How is the Academic Index calculated?

The AI is calculated by adding a Converted Grade Score (CGS), which is derived from your GPA or class rank, to a Converted Test Score derived from your SAT or ACT. Each component is scaled to produce a final AI score. Roughly two-thirds of the index is weighted toward test scores and one-third toward grades/rank, depending on the specific formula version used.

What AI score do I need to be recruited by an Ivy League school?

Ivy League athletic programs require that a team's average Academic Index meets or exceeds a school-specific minimum (typically around 176). Individual recruited athletes generally need an AI of at least 171, though this varies by sport and school. Athletes with AI scores below 167 are rarely admitted as recruited athletes.

Can I still be recruited if my school doesn't report class rank?

Yes. If your school does not report class rank, Ivy League programs typically substitute your unweighted GPA to compute the Converted Grade Score. This calculator uses your GPA directly in that scenario, which is standard practice among Ivy League athletic departments.

Does the Academic Index apply to all Ivy League sports?

Yes, all Ivy League athletic programs — from football and basketball to track & field and rowing — must comply with Academic Index requirements. Each team's average AI is monitored, and coaches cannot recruit athletes whose AI is significantly below the band average without jeopardizing the team's eligibility.

How is the ACT converted for the Academic Index?

The ACT composite score is converted to an equivalent SAT-like scale using an official concordance table, and then that converted score is used to calculate the Converted Test Score component of the AI. This calculator applies that standard ACT-to-AI conversion automatically when you select ACT.

Is a high Academic Index enough to guarantee Ivy League admission as an athlete?

No. A strong Academic Index is a necessary threshold but not sufficient on its own. Ivy League admissions remain holistic — essays, recommendations, extracurriculars, and the overall application still matter enormously. The AI determines whether a coach can actively support your application, not whether you will be admitted.

What is a good Academic Index score?

Scores above 220 are considered excellent and reflect near-perfect GPAs and test scores. Scores in the 176–219 range are competitive for Ivy League athletic recruitment. Scores between 167–175 are borderline, and scores below 167 make Ivy League athletic recruitment very unlikely.
