Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Assignment Grade Calculator work?

The calculator uses weighted averages to determine your current course grade based on completed assignments. You enter each assignment's score and its percentage weight toward the final grade. It then calculates the score you need on your remaining assignment to reach your target grade using the formula: Required Score = (Target Grade − Current Weighted Total) ÷ Remaining Weight.

What if my assignment weights don't add up to 100%?

That's fine — the completed weights and the remaining weight you enter simply need to reflect your course's grading structure. If your completed assignments plus remaining weight don't total 100%, it may mean some graded components are not included. Make sure the 'Remaining Assignment Weight' field covers all ungraded work for the most accurate result.

What does it mean if the required score is over 100%?

A required score above 100% means your target grade is mathematically impossible to achieve given your current scores and the weight remaining. In this case, you may need to adjust your target grade downward or check whether extra credit opportunities exist in your course.

Can I use this calculator for letter grades instead of percentages?

This calculator works with percentage scores. If your assignments are graded with letter grades, convert them to their percentage equivalents first (e.g., A = 95%, B = 85%, C = 75%, D = 65%) before entering them into the score fields.

How is the weighted grade calculated?

The weighted grade is the sum of each assignment's score multiplied by its weight (as a decimal). For example, if you scored 85% on an assignment worth 20% of your grade, it contributes 17 points (0.85 × 20) to your total. All contributions are summed to get your current weighted average.

What if some of my assignments have equal weight?

If all assignments carry equal weight, simply divide 100% by the total number of assignments and enter that value as each assignment's weight. For example, 5 equally weighted assignments would each be worth 20%.

Can I calculate the grade needed for a final exam specifically?

Yes — just treat the final exam as your 'remaining assignment.' Enter all your completed coursework with their scores and weights, then enter the final exam's weight in the 'Remaining Assignment Weight' field. The calculator will tell you exactly what score you need on the final to hit your target grade.

How is the letter grade determined from my percentage?

The calculator maps your current weighted average to a standard letter grade: A (93–100%), A- (90–92%), B+ (87–89%), B (83–86%), B- (80–82%), C+ (77–79%), C (73–76%), C- (70–72%), D+ (67–69%), D (63–66%), D- (60–62%), and F (below 60%). These are common academic standards but may vary by institution.
