ATAR Calculator (Australia)

Enter your subject scores and grades to estimate your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Add up to 5 subjects with their raw scores, include any adjustment factor points, and get an estimated ATAR out of 99.95. Your best 4 subjects (plus a 10% bonus from your 5th) are used in the calculation, just like the real formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this ATAR Calculator give me my exact ATAR?

No — this tool provides an estimate only. Your actual ATAR depends on the scaling statistics applied in your specific exam year, the performance of all students in each subject, and other state-specific factors. Use this calculator as a planning guide, not a guaranteed result.

How is the ATAR calculated in Australia?

The ATAR is calculated from a student's best 4 subjects, plus a 10% bonus from a 5th subject (and sometimes a 6th). Raw scores are scaled to account for subject difficulty and cohort performance. The final aggregate is then converted to an ATAR rank out of 99.95.

What scores should I enter into the calculator?

Enter your expected HSC, VCE, WACE, QCE, or SACE marks out of 100 for each subject. You can use your most recent assessment results, practice exam scores, or predicted grades. The more accurate your inputs, the more reliable your estimate will be.

Why does scaling change the ATAR calculation from year to year?

Scaling adjusts raw subject scores to reflect the relative difficulty of each subject and the ability level of students who chose it. Because the student cohort changes every year, scaling statistics shift annually. This means an identical set of raw scores could produce a different ATAR in different years.

What are adjustment factor points?

Adjustment factors are additional points added to your ATAR selection rank by universities to recognise disadvantage or special circumstances — such as attending a low-SES school, living in a rural area, or being the first in your family to attend university. The maximum adjustment is typically 8 points, and eligibility varies by institution and state.

How many subjects count toward my ATAR?

Generally, your best 4 subjects count in full toward your ATAR aggregate, and a 5th subject contributes 10% of its scaled score. Some states also allow a small contribution from a 6th subject. Subjects must meet minimum requirements set by your state's curriculum authority.

Can I use this calculator for any Australian state?

This calculator provides a general ATAR estimate applicable across Australia, including NSW (HSC), VIC (VCE), WA (WACE), QLD (QCE), and SA (SACE). However, exact scaling formulas differ between states, so for the most precise estimate, use your state's official ATAR calculator.

What is the highest possible ATAR?

The maximum ATAR is 99.95, which means a student performed better than 99.95% of the eligible student population. An ATAR of 99.95 is extremely rare. Most university courses have selection ranks well below 90, so check your target course's entry requirements for guidance.
