Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GATE Score and how is it different from raw marks?

Raw marks are what you score directly in the GATE exam out of 100. The GATE Score is a normalized value out of 1000 that accounts for difficulty variation across sessions and years. It is the official metric used by IITs, NITs, and PSUs for admission and recruitment, not your raw marks.

What is the GATE marks normalization process?

When GATE is held in multiple sessions, normalization ensures fair comparison. The formula scales your session marks relative to the session topper's marks and the mean marks of the top 0.1% candidates across all sessions. This removes the effect of paper difficulty variation between sessions.

How to calculate GATE Score from marks?

The official GATE Score formula is: GATE Score = (Sq - Si) × (M̄t − Mq) / (M̄t − M̄q) + Sq, where Sq = 900, Si = 350, Mq = candidate's normalized marks, M̄t = mean of top 0.1% candidates, and M̄q = qualifying marks threshold. This calculator applies that formula automatically using your inputs.

What are the qualifying marks for GATE 2026?

The qualifying cutoff marks depend on both the paper and candidate category. Typically, General/EWS candidates need around 25 marks (or 25% of total, whichever is higher), OBC-NCL candidates need 22.5 marks, and SC/ST/PwD candidates need 16.67 marks. Exact values are announced by the organizing IIT after the exam.

What is a good GATE rank to get admission to an IIT?

For M.Tech admission at top IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur), a rank within the top 200 is generally considered safe for competitive branches like CS and EC. For other IITs and popular branches, a rank under 1000 is advisable. NITs typically consider candidates with ranks up to 5000–10000 depending on the branch.

What is a good GATE score for PSU recruitment?

Most PSUs (BHEL, ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, etc.) require a minimum GATE score of 700–800 out of 1000 for shortlisting. The exact cutoff varies by PSU and discipline. A score above 750 significantly improves your chances of being considered in most top public sector undertakings.

What is the difference between rank in my session and overall GATE rank?

Your session rank is your position among candidates who appeared in the same exam slot. Overall GATE rank is your position after normalization across all sessions for your paper. The official rank released in your scorecard is the overall rank, which this calculator estimates based on normalized score.

Does negative marking apply to all GATE questions?

No. Negative marking applies only to MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) — 1/3 mark is deducted for wrong answers to 1-mark questions and 2/3 mark for wrong answers to 2-mark questions. MSQ (Multiple Select Questions) and NAT (Numerical Answer Type) questions carry no negative marks.
