Frequently Asked Questions

What is a weighted grade and how is it calculated?

A weighted grade accounts for the relative importance of each assignment or exam in your final grade. It is calculated by multiplying each component's score by its weight (as a decimal), then summing those products. For example, scoring 80% on an assignment worth 30% contributes 24 points toward your final grade.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?

An unweighted grade is simply the average of all your scores, treating every assignment equally. A weighted grade assigns different levels of importance to each component — so a final exam worth 50% impacts your grade much more than a quiz worth 5%. Most college courses use weighted grading.

Do my weights need to add up to 100%?

Ideally yes — if your weights total 100%, the calculator gives you a straightforward weighted average. If they don't sum to exactly 100%, the calculator still computes a proportional weighted average by dividing the total weighted score by the sum of your entered weights.

How is a letter grade determined from a percentage?

Most grading scales use: A (90–100%), B (80–89%), C (70–79%), D (60–69%), and F (below 60%). Some schools use +/- modifiers (e.g. A-, B+). This calculator uses a standard percentage-to-letter-grade conversion, but always check your course syllabus for your specific scale.

Can I use this calculator for percentage grades and point-based grades?

Yes. When using percentage mode, enter each score as a percentage out of 100 and its corresponding weight. For point-based grading, enter each score as points earned out of the maximum points, and use the point totals as weights — the calculator will normalize them automatically.

How do I calculate the grade I need on my final exam?

If you know your current grade and the weight of your final exam, you can rearrange the weighted grade formula: Final Needed = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. Enter your current components here to find your running grade, then use that value in the final exam calculator.

What if some of my grades are still missing or incomplete?

Simply leave those component rows blank or set their weight to 0. The calculator will only include components where both a score and a weight greater than 0 have been entered, giving you a partial weighted average based on completed work.

How does this calculator handle extra credit or bonus points?

You can include extra credit by entering a score above 100% for that component (e.g. 105%). As long as your course allows scores above 100, the weighted calculation will reflect the bonus in your overall grade naturally.
