Frequently Asked Questions

How is the IB Diploma score calculated?

The IB Diploma score is out of 45 points. You earn up to 42 points from six subjects (each graded 1–7), plus up to 3 bonus points from the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE) matrix. Your TOK and EE letter grades (A–E) are combined to determine how many bonus points (0–3) you receive.

What are the IB Diploma failing conditions?

You can fail the IB Diploma even with a high total score if certain conditions are met: scoring an E in either TOK or EE, having more than three grades at level 3 or below, having a grade 1 in any subject, failing to complete CAS, or not having at least three subjects at Higher Level. This calculator checks for the most common of these conditions.

How many HL and SL subjects do I need?

IB Diploma students must take at least three (and no more than four) subjects at Higher Level (HL) and the remaining subjects at Standard Level (SL), totalling exactly six subjects across the six subject groups.

How does the TOK/EE bonus points matrix work?

TOK and EE grades are combined using an official matrix. The maximum bonus is 3 points (both A). If one is A and the other B, you get 3 points. Mixed combinations of B/C typically give 1–2 points. If either receives an E grade, you receive 0 bonus points and it becomes a failing condition.

What is the minimum score to be awarded the IB Diploma?

The minimum total score to receive the IB Diploma is 24 points out of 45, provided no failing conditions are triggered. You also need at least a D in both TOK and EE, completion of CAS, and no grade 1 in any subject.

Does CAS affect my IB score?

CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) does not add points to your score, but it is a mandatory requirement for diploma award. Failing to complete CAS requirements will result in the diploma not being awarded regardless of your total score.

Can I use this calculator for predicted grades sent to universities?

Yes. This calculator is well-suited for estimating the predicted grade your school will submit to universities. Simply enter the grades your teachers expect you to achieve rather than your current grades. Keep in mind final boundaries vary by exam session.

What is the difference between Timezone 1, 2, and 3 in IB grading?

IB exam timezones refer to regional exam schedules (e.g., Timezone 1 for Europe/Africa, Timezone 2 for Americas, Timezone 3 for Asia-Pacific). While the same grade boundaries generally apply globally, specific subject papers and their mark boundaries can differ slightly by timezone. This simplified calculator uses grade inputs (1–7) directly, which are already timezone-adjusted.
