Frequently Asked Questions

How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?

Your overall IELTS band score is the average of your four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The average is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band using official IELTS rounding rules: averages ending in .25 are rounded up to the next half band, and those ending in .75 are rounded up to the next whole band.

What are the IELTS rounding rules?

IELTS uses a specific rounding method. If the average of the four sections ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next .5. If it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole number. For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, and an average of 6.75 becomes 7.0. All other values are rounded to the nearest 0.5.

What is the highest possible IELTS band score?

The highest possible overall IELTS band score is 9, which is described as an 'Expert User' of the English language. Band 9 indicates you have a full operational command of the language with complete accuracy, fluency, and understanding.

Are all four IELTS sections weighted equally?

Yes. Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking each contribute equally to your overall band score. No single section carries more weight than another in the final calculation.

What band score do I need for university admission?

Requirements vary by institution and course. Most undergraduate programs at UK, Australian, and Canadian universities require an overall band score of 6.0–6.5, while postgraduate programs typically require 6.5–7.0. Always check the specific entry requirements of the institution and course you are applying to.

What is the difference between Academic and General Training IELTS?

Both tests share the same Listening and Speaking components, but the Reading and Writing sections differ. Academic IELTS is intended for university admission and professional registration, while General Training IELTS is used for secondary education, work experience, and migration to English-speaking countries. The overall band score is calculated the same way for both.

Can I retake individual IELTS sections to improve my score?

Yes — IELTS One Skill Retake allows test takers to resit one of the four sections within 60 days of their original test, rather than retaking the full exam. This applies to tests taken at British Council, IDP, and IELTS USA test centres, subject to availability.

How long is my IELTS score valid?

IELTS scores are generally valid for two years from the date of the test. After two years, scores are no longer considered a reliable reflection of your current language ability by most institutions and immigration authorities.
