Frequently Asked Questions

How is the weighted average grade calculated?

The weighted average is calculated by multiplying each subject's grade by its credit weight, summing all those products, then dividing by the total number of credits. This gives more important (higher-credit) subjects greater influence on your overall average.

What if all my subjects have equal weight?

If you assign the same credit value to every subject (e.g. all set to 1), the calculator produces a simple arithmetic average — the sum of all grades divided by the number of subjects. You can leave the weight fields at 1 for an unweighted average.

How are letter grades assigned to percentage scores?

The calculator uses a standard scale: A+ (97–100%), A (93–96%), A- (90–92%), B+ (87–89%), B (83–86%), B- (80–82%), C+ (77–79%), C (73–76%), C- (70–72%), D+ (67–69%), D (63–66%), D- (60–62%), and F (below 60%).

Can I calculate both term and annual averages?

Yes. For a term average, enter the subjects and grades from a single term. For an annual average, you can enter each term's subjects individually, or combine all subjects across the year and assign weights proportional to their credit hours or importance.

What grade do I need on remaining assignments to reach my target?

This calculator focuses on report card averages across subjects. For calculating what grade you need on a specific final exam or assignment to hit a target score in one course, use a dedicated Final Grade Calculator alongside this tool.

Do I have to fill in all 8 subjects?

No — only Subject 1 is required. The calculator automatically detects which subject rows have both a valid grade and a credit weight entered, and includes only those in the weighted average. Leave unused rows blank.

Can I use points instead of percentages for grades?

The calculator is optimized for percentage-based grades (0–100). If your school uses a points scale (e.g. 0–4.0 GPA), you should convert your grades to percentages first, or use a dedicated GPA calculator for letter-grade point scales.

Why does credit weighting matter for my average?

A subject worth 4 credits contributes more to your overall average than one worth 1 credit. Without weighting, a minor elective would unfairly drag down or boost your average as much as a core subject — credit weighting ensures the average reflects actual academic workload.
