Rubric Score Calculator

Enter your rubric levels, criteria count, and the score earned to convert any rubric-based assessment into a percentage grade. Set your minimum passing grade and choose whether your levels run in ascending or descending order — the calculator returns your percentage score, letter grade, and a clear pass/fail result.

How many performance levels does your rubric have? (e.g. 4 for Excellent/Good/Fair/Poor)

How many criteria (rows) are in your rubric?

In descending order, level 4 is the highest score. In ascending order, level 1 is the highest score.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Rubric Score Calculator convert a rubric score to a percentage?

The calculator divides your total score earned by the maximum possible score (number of levels × number of criteria), then multiplies by 100. For example, if your rubric has 4 levels and 5 criteria, the maximum score is 20. Earning 14 points gives you 14 ÷ 20 × 100 = 70%.

What is the maximum possible score in a rubric?

The maximum possible score equals the highest level value multiplied by the number of criteria. In a 4-level, 5-criteria rubric, the maximum is 4 × 5 = 20 points. Every criterion scored at the top level would achieve this maximum.

What does ascending vs. descending level order mean?

In descending order (most common), the highest-numbered level represents the best performance — so level 4 is the top score in a 4-level rubric. In ascending order, level 1 represents the best performance. The calculator adjusts the percentage conversion accordingly.

How do I calculate my total rubric score to enter into the calculator?

Add up the level number selected for each criterion across your rubric. For example, if you have 5 criteria and scored levels 4, 3, 4, 2, and 3 respectively, your total score is 4 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 3 = 16. Enter this sum into the 'Total Score Earned' field.

What letter grade corresponds to my percentage score?

The calculator uses a standard grading scale: 90–100% = A, 80–89% = B, 70–79% = C, 60–69% = D, and below 60% = F. Your specific institution may use a slightly different scale, but this is the most widely accepted standard.

Can I use this calculator for rubrics with different numbers of levels?

Yes — the calculator supports rubrics with 2 to 10 levels and 1 to 15 criteria. Simply adjust the 'Number of Levels' and 'Number of Criteria' fields to match your rubric design before entering the score.

What is the minimum passing grade and how does it affect the result?

The minimum passing grade is the percentage threshold a student must meet or exceed to pass. You can set this anywhere from 0% to 100%. The calculator compares the calculated percentage against this threshold and displays a clear Pass or Fail result, along with how many percentage points the score is above or below the cutoff.

Why might rubric grading produce unexpected percentages?

A common grading error occurs when rubrics do not start at zero — for example, a 4-level rubric with levels 1–4 gives a minimum score of the number of criteria (not zero), which inflates the percentage floor. This calculator uses the true maximum (levels × criteria) to give an accurate conversion.
