Frequently Asked Questions

What is an SAT superscore?

An SAT superscore is the sum of your highest section scores across multiple test sittings. For the SAT, this means taking your best Reading & Writing score and your best Math score — even if they came from different test dates — and adding them together to get a composite superscore.

How do you calculate your SAT superscore?

Identify your highest Reading & Writing score from any test date, then identify your highest Math score from any test date. Add the two together for your superscore. For example, a 650 R&W from Test 1 plus a 680 Math from Test 2 gives a superscore of 1330.

Which colleges accept SAT superscores?

Many selective colleges and universities use superscoring, including most Ivy League schools, large public universities, and liberal arts colleges. You should always check each school's individual admissions page, as policies vary and some schools consider only your highest single-sitting score instead.

Is SAT superscoring automatic?

At most colleges, superscoring happens automatically on the admissions office's side when you send all your scores. However, you need to send all your SAT score reports from each test date so the admissions team has the data to compute your superscore. Always follow each school's score-sending policy.

How many times should I take the SAT to maximize my superscore?

Most students benefit from taking the SAT two to three times. Each retake gives you another chance to improve a weaker section. However, there are diminishing returns after three or four attempts, so focus your energy on targeted preparation before each sitting.

Can I superscore between the digital and paper SAT?

The College Board transitioned fully to the digital SAT in 2024. Most colleges that superscore will consider scores from both the former paper-based SAT and the current digital SAT, but it's worth confirming directly with your target schools since policies are still being updated.

What is the difference between a superscore and a single-sitting score?

A single-sitting score is the total you earned on one specific test date — the sum of your R&W and Math scores from that day only. A superscore combines the best individual section scores across all your test dates, so it is always equal to or higher than your best single-sitting composite.

What is a good SAT superscore?

A superscore above 1400 is considered strong and competitive at most four-year colleges. Scores above 1500 are excellent and competitive at highly selective schools. The national average SAT score is around 1050, so even a moderate superscore improvement can meaningfully strengthen your application.
