The TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is a standardized English proficiency exam developed by ETS. It measures Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing skills. Each section is scored on a 0–30 scale, and the four section scores are added together for a total score ranging from 0 to 120.
Your total TOEFL iBT score is simply the sum of your four section scores: Reading + Listening + Speaking + Writing. Since each section is scored out of 30, the maximum possible total is 120. This calculator does that addition for you and shows your proficiency level.
A score of 100 or above is generally considered competitive for top universities, especially in the USA and Canada. Scores between 80–99 are acceptable for many institutions. Most universities set a minimum requirement between 60 and 90, so always check the specific requirements of your target program.
There is no universal pass or fail for the TOEFL iBT. Each institution sets its own minimum score requirements. You 'pass' for a particular university if your score meets or exceeds their stated threshold. Score requirements vary widely — from around 45 at some community colleges to 110+ at elite programs.
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for two years from your test date. After two years, ETS no longer reports the scores officially. Most universities require scores to be from within the last two years at the time of application, so plan your test accordingly.
ETS typically releases TOEFL iBT scores within 4 to 8 days after your test date. You will receive an email notification when your scores are available in your ETS account. Official score reports sent to institutions may take a few additional days to process.
MyBest® Scores (also called SuperScore) is an ETS feature that combines your highest section scores from all valid TOEFL iBT test dates within the past two years. For example, if you scored 28 in Reading on one attempt and 27 in Listening on another, MyBest® reports both top scores together. Many universities now accept MyBest® Scores.
ETS has announced updates to the TOEFL iBT score report format starting in 2026, including enhanced section-level feedback and updated proficiency descriptors. The core 0–120 scoring scale and four-section structure are expected to remain the same. Always check the official ETS website for the latest updates.
