Weighted GPA Calculator

Enter your courses, grades, credit hours, and course level (Regular, Honors, AP, or IB) to calculate your weighted GPA. The calculator applies standard bonus points — +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP/IB — and returns your weighted GPA, unweighted GPA, and total quality points side by side. Add up to 8 courses and see how advanced coursework boosts your cumulative average.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale for every class regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB classes — before calculating the average. This means a weighted GPA can exceed 4.0 and better reflects the rigor of a student's coursework.

How do AP, Honors, and IB classes affect weighted GPA?

Advanced courses receive an additional grade point bonus to reflect their increased difficulty. Most high schools add +0.5 for Honors classes and +1.0 for AP or IB classes to the base grade point value before multiplying by credits. For example, a B (3.0) in an AP class becomes 4.0 (3.0 + 1.0) for weighted GPA purposes.

Can you get a GPA higher than 4.0?

Yes — on a weighted scale, it is entirely possible to exceed 4.0. A student earning straight A's in AP or IB classes could achieve a weighted GPA as high as 5.3. Colleges are aware of this and evaluate weighted GPAs in the context of course difficulty.

How is weighted GPA calculated?

For each course, add the level bonus (0 for Regular, +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB) to the base grade points, then multiply by the number of credits to get quality points. Sum all quality points and divide by the total number of credits. The result is your weighted GPA.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA reflects your performance in a single semester's courses only. Cumulative GPA is the overall average across all semesters completed, weighted by credit hours. Colleges typically look at both, but cumulative GPA carries more weight in admissions decisions.

Do electives, PE, and arts classes count toward GPA?

It depends on the school's policy. Many high schools include all courses in GPA calculations, including electives, PE, and arts. However, some schools exclude certain non-academic courses. Check your school's grading policy or transcript notes to confirm which courses are included.

Do 9th-grade grades count toward cumulative GPA?

At most high schools, 9th-grade grades are included in the cumulative GPA that appears on your transcript. Some colleges recalculate GPA using only academic courses from 10th–12th grade, but officially your freshman year grades still count.

Do Pass/Fail classes affect GPA?

Generally, Pass/Fail courses do not affect your GPA because they are not assigned a letter grade or grade points. A passing mark earns credits toward graduation but is excluded from the GPA calculation. A failing mark may or may not impact GPA depending on your school's policy.
