The number depends on your arch height, width, and the size of balloons you use. As a rule of thumb, divide the total arch length (in inches) by the balloon diameter (in inches) and multiply by 0.87 to account for the staggered overlap. Our calculator does this automatically for you.
It depends on the shape of your arch. If the width is greater than the height, the arch length ≈ height + width. If they are roughly equal, use 1.5 × height + width. If the height is much greater than the width (a tall, narrow arch), use 2 × height + width. These formulas approximate the curved path of the arch frame.
11-inch latex balloons are the most popular choice for balloon arches because they offer a good balance of size, visibility, and cost. Smaller 5-inch or 9-inch balloons work well for tighter, more detailed designs, while 14-inch or 16-inch balloons create a bold, dramatic look but require fewer balloons overall.
Most balloon arches are built on a rigid frame or fishing line and do not require helium — air-filled balloons actually last much longer (days vs. hours for helium). Helium arches are possible but are more expensive and deflate faster, so air-filled arches are generally recommended for decorations.

The 0.87 multiplier accounts for the fact that balloons in an arch overlap and stagger slightly — they don't sit perfectly end-to-end in a straight line. Dividing arch length by balloon diameter and multiplying by 0.87 gives a more realistic count that matches real-world balloon arch builds.
