Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much fabric I need for curtains?

To calculate curtain fabric, multiply the finished width of each panel by the number of panels, then add seam and hem allowances. Divide the total required length by the fabric roll width to find how many widths you need, then multiply by the cut length. Our calculator does all of this automatically once you enter your panel dimensions and fabric roll width.

What is seam allowance and how much should I add?

Seam allowance is the extra fabric between the cut edge and the stitching line. A standard seam allowance is 1/2 inch (0.5 in) per side for most sewing projects. For upholstery or heavy-duty applications you may use 3/4 inch, while quilting patterns often specify 1/4 inch. Always check your pattern instructions for the recommended amount.

Why should I add a waste buffer to my fabric calculation?

A waste buffer accounts for cutting errors, fabric imperfections, directional prints, and pattern matching. A 10% buffer is recommended for most projects. For fabrics with a large pattern repeat or complex projects like slip covers, bumping up to 15–20% can save you from running short. It's always cheaper to buy a little extra than to order more fabric later from a different dye lot.

How many yards of fabric do I need for a cushion?

A standard 18×18 inch throw pillow typically requires about 0.5–0.75 yards of 54-inch fabric for one piece. Larger cushions, knife-edge boxing, or welting will require additional yardage. Enter your exact cushion dimensions into the calculator to get a precise estimate including seam allowances.

What fabric widths are most common?

Quilting cotton is typically 44 inches wide. Decorator and drapery fabrics are commonly 54 inches wide. Upholstery fabrics often come in 54–60 inch widths, while some specialty and outdoor fabrics can be 72 inches or wider. Using a wider fabric generally means fewer seams and less waste per project.

How do I convert fabric yardage to meters?

One yard equals 0.9144 meters. To convert yards to meters, multiply the number of yards by 0.9144. For example, 3 yards equals approximately 2.74 meters. Our calculator automatically displays results in both yards and meters so you don't have to convert manually.

Does the calculator account for pattern repeats?

The calculator includes a waste buffer percentage that can approximate the extra fabric needed for pattern repeats. For precise pattern matching, select the 15% or 20% buffer option. As a rule of thumb, add one full pattern repeat per cut length to ensure motifs align across panels. For large repeats (12 inches or more), consult your fabric supplier for specific guidance.

Can I use this calculator for upholstery projects?

Yes. Select 'Upholstery' as your project type and enter the dimensions of each fabric section you need to cut — seat, back, arms, etc. — as separate pieces. Use a 54 or 60-inch fabric width and a 15–20% waste buffer to account for the complexity of fitting fabric over furniture frames. For very large or custom pieces, a professional upholsterer's layout estimate is also recommended.
