How do I calculate the number of hexagons for quilting?

First, divide your quilt width by (hexagon size × 1.732) and round up to get the number of columns. Then use the formula (2L − d) / (3d) to find the number of rows, rounding up to the nearest odd number. Finally, apply the hexagon count formula: ((rows/2 + 0.5) × columns) + ((rows/2 − 0.5) × (columns − 1)). This calculator handles all of that for you automatically.

What does hexagon size mean in quilting?

Hexagon size refers to the finished side length of one hexagon after the seam allowance has been folded or sewn. A 1" hexagon has six sides each measuring 1 inch. When you purchase English paper piecing templates or pre-cut papers, the size listed is typically this finished measurement.

Why do I need half hexagons?

When a hexagon quilt layout has staggered columns, the edges of the quilt end up with half-hexagon shaped gaps. Will the actual quilt size exactly match what I enter?

Not exactly, because hexagons must be arranged in whole-number columns and rows. The calculator rounds up to the nearest whole column and the nearest odd row count, then computes the actual finished dimensions from those rounded values. Your real quilt will be close to, but may be slightly larger than, your target size.

Can I use any size hexagon for my quilt?

Yes — hexagons come in many sizes, from tiny ¼" papers used in intricate miniature quilts all the way up to 6" or larger for a bold modern look.
