Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as 'dead time' for listening to podcasts?

Dead time is any period where your hands and eyes are busy but your mind is free — commuting, exercising, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, or even showering. These are perfect windows to fit in podcast episodes without sacrificing anything else in your schedule.

How does the podcast calculator work?

The calculator multiplies your daily activity time by the number of days per week you do each activity, sums all that dead time together, adjusts for your chosen playback speed, and divides by your average episode length. The result shows how many episodes you can realistically consume each week, month, and year.

How can I listen to more episodes without spending extra time?

The easiest way is to increase your playback speed. Most podcast apps let you listen at 1.25×, 1.5×, or even 2× speed. At 1.5× speed you can fit 50% more episodes into the same commute. You can also identify hidden dead time you hadn't counted — like time spent waiting in queues or doing laundry.

What is a realistic average podcast episode length?

The average podcast episode runs between 20 and 45 minutes, though popular shows like true crime or long-form interviews can run 60–90 minutes. News briefings are often as short as 5–15 minutes. Use the average length of the genres you typically listen to for the most accurate estimate.

Does playback speed affect comprehension?

For most people, speeds up to 1.5× are comfortable after a short adjustment period and comprehension stays high. Going above 2× can make it harder to follow complex topics. Start at 1.25× and work your way up gradually if you want to fit more content into your day.

How many podcasts do most people listen to per week?

According to podcast industry surveys, the average weekly listener consumes about 7–8 episodes per week. However, heavy listeners who actively use their commute and exercise time can easily hit 15–20 episodes or more per week without any lifestyle changes.

Can I use this calculator for audiobooks too?

Absolutely. Just enter your average audiobook chapter length (or the full book length divided by chapters) as the episode length, and the calculator will show you how many chapters you can get through each week during your dead time.

Why does commute time count both ways?

The calculator treats your commute input as a one-way trip and automatically doubles it to account for the round trip. A 25-minute one-way commute means 50 minutes of total listening time on any day you commute, so make sure to enter just the one-way duration.
