Frequently Asked Questions

How many skill points can you get in The Witcher 3?

In the base game, you earn 1 skill point per level up to level 70, plus up to 30 additional points from Places of Power. With both DLCs active, the effective cap rises further due to Mutation system bonuses. Most players reach around 60–80 total skill points in a full playthrough.

What are Places of Power and how many are there?

Places of Power are special locations scattered across the game world that grant a free bonus skill point when activated. There are approximately 30 in the base game, with a few additional ones added in the DLCs. Visiting all of them is highly recommended for any build.

How does the Mutation system work in Blood and Wine?

The Mutation system, introduced in the Blood and Wine DLC, unlocks a separate ability tree that lets Geralt develop powerful passive bonuses. Each Mutation costs special Ability Points and can enhance an entire skill branch. You can have one active Mutation at a time, but you can unlock up to 12 total.

How many skill slots does Geralt have?

By default, Geralt has 12 active skill slots arranged in groups. Equipping colored Mutagen crystals in corresponding slots grants set bonuses. With the Blood and Wine DLC and the Mutation system, you can unlock up to 4 additional slots, bringing the total to 16.

What is the best Witcher 3 build for beginners?

A Combat-focused build emphasizing Fast Attack, Undying, and Whirl is generally recommended for beginners. It is straightforward, deals consistent damage, and Undying provides a strong survival safety net. Supplementing with a few Alchemy points for Heightened Tolerance makes potions more effective.

Can you respec your skill points in Witcher 3?

Yes. You can reset all allocated skill points by using a Potion of Clearance, which can be purchased from certain merchants or crafted. This allows you to try different build archetypes without starting a new game. Your character level and Places of Power points are unaffected.

Does investing in one skill branch lock you out of others?

No. Skill points are flexible and you can invest freely across all branches — Combat, Signs, Alchemy, and General. However, some higher-tier skills require a minimum number of points spent in that branch to unlock. This encourages some degree of specialization for access to the strongest abilities.

What is the difference between skill points and ability points in Mutations?

Regular skill points are earned from leveling and Places of Power, and they unlock and upgrade normal skills. Ability Points used in the Mutation system are a separate resource gained by researching Mutations using mutagens and standard skill points as currency. They cannot be used interchangeably.
