Duration Calculator

Enter a start date and time and an end date and time to calculate the exact duration between them. Your results show the total span broken down into years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds — plus a combined total in days and hours alone. Optionally include the end date in the count for inclusive date ranges.

Check this to count the end date as a full day in the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Duration Calculator work?

Enter your start date and time, then your end date and time. The calculator finds the difference between the two moments and breaks it down into years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds. It also shows the total span as a single number of days and total hours.

What does 'Include end date' mean?

By default, the calculator measures from the start of your start date to the start of your end date — so the end date itself is not counted. Checking 'Include end date' adds one full day to the result, which is useful when you want to count both the first and last days of a range (e.g. a hotel stay or event duration).

Can I calculate the duration between times on the same day?

Yes. Set both the start date and end date to the same date, then enter your start and end times. The calculator will return the hours, minutes, and seconds between the two times.

How are months calculated in the duration?

Months are counted by comparing the calendar month of the start and end dates, accounting for years. Because months have different lengths (28–31 days), the remaining days shown after subtracting full months may vary. The total days figure is always the most precise measure.

What is the difference between total days and the days component?

Total Days is the complete number of days between the two dates, including the contribution from years and months. The 'Days' component in the breakdown shows only the leftover days after full years and full months have been subtracted.

Does the calculator account for leap years?

Yes. Because the calculator works directly with calendar dates, leap years (with 366 days) are handled automatically. February 29 is a valid date on leap years, and the extra day is counted correctly in the total.

Can I use this to calculate business days or working days?

This calculator shows the total calendar duration (all days including weekends and holidays). For working-day calculations, you would need a dedicated business days calculator that excludes weekends and public holidays.

What if my end date is before my start date?

The calculator will return zero for all outputs if the end date/time is earlier than the start date/time. Make sure your end date is later than your start date for a valid result.
