Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much cake I need?

Multiply your guest count by the portion size you plan to serve. Standard party slices (1.5" × 2") yield fewer servings per cake than smaller wedding slices (1" × 2"). Once you know the servings needed, match that number to a cake size chart for your chosen shape — round, square, or sheet.

Why does an 8-inch round cake only serve about 16–20 people?

An 8-inch round cake is cut into wedge-shaped slices. Using industry-standard party cuts (1.5" wide), you get roughly 16 slices from an 8-inch round. Switching to smaller wedding cuts (1" wide) can push that to around 20–24 slices. The cake's diameter directly limits how many evenly sized pieces you can cut.

What is the difference between a party slice and a wedding slice?

A party slice is typically 1.5" × 2" × 4" tall — a generous, casual portion. A wedding slice is smaller at 1" × 2" × 4", designed so guests who are eating multiple courses or desserts aren't overwhelmed. Using wedding-sized cuts from the same cake can yield 30–50% more servings than party cuts.

How many servings does a full sheet cake provide?

A full sheet cake (18" × 24") typically yields about 48 large servings, 64–70 standard party servings, or up to 96 small/wedding servings. A half sheet (12" × 18") provides roughly half those amounts. Sheet cakes are very efficient for feeding large groups.

Does adding more layers or tiers increase the number of servings?

Adding more cake layers (height) does NOT increase the number of servings, because slices are cut vertically — taller cakes just mean taller slices. However, a tiered cake with multiple separate tiers of different diameters DOES add servings, because each tier contributes its own count of slices.

Do square cakes serve more people than round cakes of the same size?

Yes — a square cake yields roughly 25% more servings than a round cake of the same diameter/width, because there is no wasted area in the corners. For example, a 10-inch square cake serves about 50 standard portions, while a 10-inch round serves around 38.

How accurate are the serving estimates from this calculator?

The estimates follow Wilton industry-standard yields and are widely used by professional cake decorators. Real-world results can vary slightly based on how the cake is actually cut and whether you are generous or conservative with slices. It's always a good idea to plan for 5–10% extra servings.

Should I order extra cake just in case?

Yes — most bakers and event planners recommend ordering or baking 10% more than your exact guest count. This accounts for guests who want a second slice, uneven cuts, or last-minute additions to the guest list. A little extra cake is always better than running short.
