Frequently Asked Questions

What is the passing score for the Air Force PT test?

The minimum passing composite score is 75 out of 100 points. However, airmen must also meet minimum component scores in each category — push-ups, sit-ups, and the 1.5-mile run — or they will receive an unsatisfactory rating regardless of their composite score.

How is the Air Force PT test scored?

The test is divided into three components: push-ups (20 points max), sit-ups (20 points max), and a 1.5-mile run (60 points max), totaling 100 points. Points are awarded based on age, gender, and performance using official USAF scoring charts. A composite score of 90 or above earns an Excellent rating.

What are the Air Force fitness categories?

Scores fall into four categories: Excellent (90–100), Satisfactory (75–89.99), Marginal (60–74.99), and Unsatisfactory (below 60). Airmen who score Unsatisfactory or fail a minimum component score are placed on a fitness improvement program.

Do scoring standards differ by age and gender?

Yes. The USAF uses age- and gender-specific scoring tables for all three components. Older airmen and female airmen generally have adjusted performance thresholds that still earn the same point values, reflecting physiological differences across age groups.

What are the minimum component scores required to pass?

Minimum scores vary by age and gender. As a general guideline for males aged 25–29, the minimums are approximately 33 push-ups (10 pts), 42 sit-ups (10 pts), and a 1.5-mile run under 13:36 (10 pts). Failing any single component results in an overall Unsatisfactory, even with a high composite.

How often do Air Force members take the PT test?

Most active duty Air Force personnel test annually if they scored Excellent on their last test. Those scoring Satisfactory test every 6 months. Members on a Fitness Improvement Program may test more frequently. Specific requirements can vary by command and individual circumstances.

Can I get an exemption from a PT test component?

Yes. A medical waiver can exempt an airman from one or more components due to injury or illness. When a component is exempted, the remaining components are weighted proportionally to still total 100 points. A medical waiver must be approved by a military physician before the test.

Is this calculator using the latest USAF scoring standards?

This calculator uses scoring tables based on published Air Force Instruction (AFI) 36-2905 standards. PT scoring tables are periodically updated by the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC), so always verify your score against the most current official tables at afpc.af.mil before your actual test.
