Frequently Asked Questions

What is the APFT and what events does it include?

The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is the US Army's standard physical readiness test. It consists of three events: push-ups (2 minutes), sit-ups (2 minutes), and a 2-mile run. Soldiers must complete all three events to receive a total score.

What is a passing APFT score?

To pass the APFT, soldiers must score at least 60 points in each of the three events and achieve a total score of at least 180 out of 300. Scoring below 60 in any single event is considered a failure regardless of the total score.

How are APFT scores calculated?

Each event is worth up to 100 points based on age and gender-specific scoring tables from FM 7-22. The three event scores are added together for a maximum possible total of 300 points. This calculator applies the official Army scoring standards for each age group.

What is considered an excellent APFT score?

A score of 270 or higher (90+ points per event) is generally considered excellent and qualifies a soldier for the Army Physical Fitness Badge. Scoring 100 points on all three events (a total of 300) is a perfect score and is a significant achievement.

Are APFT scoring standards different for men and women?

Yes. Male and female soldiers are scored on different scales that account for physiological differences. Women typically have lower minimum repetition and faster run-time thresholds required for each point value. This calculator accounts for gender-specific standards.

Do APFT scoring standards change with age?

Yes. The APFT uses age group brackets (e.g., 17–21, 22–26, 27–31, etc.) with adjusted standards. As soldiers get older, the minimum thresholds for each score level are generally lower to reflect age-related physiological changes. Enter your exact age to get accurate results.

What is the difference between the APFT and the new Army Fitness Test (AFT/ACFT)?

The APFT (push-ups, sit-ups, 2-mile run) was the Army's standard fitness test for decades. The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), now called the Army Fitness Test (AFT), replaced it and includes six events: deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, plank, and a 2-mile run. This calculator scores the traditional APFT.

Can I use this calculator to prepare for promotion points?

Yes. APFT scores contribute to enlisted promotion points under AR 600-8-19. Soldiers receive up to 185 promotion points based on their APFT score. A higher APFT score — especially 270 and above — can significantly boost your overall promotion point total.
