Barbell Racking Calculator

Enter your target weight, bar weight, and unit preference (lbs or kg) to find the exact plate combination needed to rack your barbell. The calculator shows you how many plates of each size to load on each side of the bar — no mental math required.

The total weight you want on the bar including the bar itself.

Standard Olympic barbell is 45 lb / 20 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the barbell racking calculator work?

The calculator takes your target weight, subtracts the bar weight, then divides the remaining weight equally between both sides. It then finds the most efficient combination of available plates to load on each side, working from heaviest to lightest (greedy algorithm). Any gap between your target and what's achievable is shown as the difference.

What is a standard barbell weight?

A standard Olympic barbell weighs 45 lb (20 kg) for men's bars and 35 lb (15 kg) for women's bars. Some specialty bars like trap bars or safety squat bars can weigh 55–70 lb. Always confirm your specific bar's weight before using the calculator.

Why does the calculator show a difference from my target weight?

Plate weights come in fixed increments (45, 35, 25, 10, 5, 2.5 lb etc.), so it's not always possible to hit an exact target. The 'Difference from Target' field shows how close your achievable load is to your goal with the plates you have available.

What's the standard plate set for an Olympic barbell?

A typical gym Olympic set includes pairs of 45 lb, 35 lb, 25 lb, 10 lb, 5 lb, and 2.5 lb plates in lb; or 20 kg, 15 kg, 10 kg, 5 kg, 2.5 kg, and 1.25 kg in metric. Enter how many of each you have available per side in the calculator.

How do I calculate plates per side manually?

Subtract the bar weight from your total target weight, then divide by 2 to get the weight needed per side. Starting with the heaviest plate, load as many as will fit without exceeding your per-side target, then move to the next plate size and repeat until you've accounted for all the weight.

Can I use this calculator for dumbbells or other equipment?

This calculator is designed specifically for barbells with standard Olympic plates. For dumbbells or machines, the loading system is different and this tool may not apply directly. However, you can set the bar weight to 0 and use the plate math for any selectorized loading scenario.

Should I load plates in any particular order on the bar?

Yes — always load heaviest plates first (closest to the sleeve collar) and lightest last (toward the end of the bar). This keeps the weight balanced and reduces stress on the bar. Always secure plates with collars before lifting.

What if I don't have enough plates to reach my target weight?

The calculator will load as much as possible with the plates you've specified and show you the difference. If you need to hit a specific weight, consider using fractional plates (1.25 lb / 0.5 kg) or increasing the number of available plates in the input fields.
