What is my body shape?

Your body shape is determined by the proportional relationships between your bust, waist, high hip, and hip measurements. Common shapes include hourglass (balanced bust and hips with a defined waist), pear (hips notably wider than bust), apple (wider waist relative to hips and bust), rectangle (similar bust, waist, and hip measurements), and inverted triangle (bust wider than hips). This calculator uses your four measurements to classify which shape best describes your proportions.

How do I measure my bust correctly?

Measure the circumference around your chest at the fullest part of your breasts while wearing a properly fitted bra. Keep the tape parallel to the ground and snug against your body — but not so tight that it compresses your chest. Stand straight with your arms relaxed at your sides.

What is the high hip measurement and where do I measure it?

The high hip (also called upper hip) is measured around the upper swell of the hip, typically about 3 to 4 inches (7–10 cm) below your natural waistline. It captures the widest part of your hip bone area rather than the fullest part of your buttocks. It helps distinguish between pear and triangle body shapes.

What does the waist-to-hip ratio mean?

The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. Health organisations use it as an indicator of body fat distribution and associated health risk. A WHR below 0.80 for women is generally considered healthy, while values above 0.85 may indicate a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other conditions.

Is body shape the same as body type?

Body shape and body type are related but not identical concepts. Body shape refers to the external silhouette created by your measurements (e.g. hourglass, pear). Body type (somatotype) refers to a broader classification of physique and metabolic tendencies — ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph. This calculator focuses on external measurement-based body shape.

Can men use this body shape calculator?

This calculator is designed primarily for females, as the body shape classifications (hourglass, pear, apple, etc.) are based on female proportional norms. Men's body shapes are typically described differently. However, the waist-to-hip ratio result is applicable and health-relevant for all genders.

Should I measure in inches or centimeters?

You can use either — just make sure you select the matching unit for each measurement. The most important thing is consistency. If you measure your bust in inches, use inches for all fields. The calculator converts measurements internally when needed to compare proportions.

Does body shape affect health risks?

There is some research linking body fat distribution patterns — particularly apple or android shapes (fat carried around the abdomen) — with higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk. However, body shape alone is not a definitive health indicator. The waist-to-hip ratio shown in the results is considered a more reliable health metric than shape classification alone.
