The most widely used rule of thumb is that a golf ball travels approximately 2% farther for every 1,000 feet of elevation above sea level. So at 5,000 feet, you can expect roughly 10% more carry distance compared to sea level. Conservative estimates use 1.5%, while aggressive estimates use 2.5% per 1,000 ft.

At higher altitudes the air is less dense, meaning there is less aerodynamic drag on the golf ball. With less resistance to overcome, the ball carries farther through the air. The effect is most noticeable on full shots with the driver and long irons.

Altitude has the greatest impact on shots with the most carry — typically driver and long irons — because those shots spend the most time in the air and travel at higher speeds. Shorter shots like wedges and putts are affected proportionally less, though the percentage adjustment remains the same.

If the ball is flying farther at your destination, you should effectively play shorter clubs than normal. For example, a shot that requires a 7-iron at home might only need an 8-iron at high altitude. Use the adjusted yardage table to identify the correct club distance equivalent for the destination elevation.

Course ratings and slope ratings issued by golf associations already factor in local altitude conditions, so official handicap differentials are generally adjusted for altitude through the Course Rating system. However, if you are playing a casual round at elevation without an official rating, your scores may appear lower than expected.

No special ball is required. Standard golf balls perform fine at altitude. Some players prefer a slightly lower-compression ball to maintain feel, but the distance increase is a natural result of thinner air rather than ball construction.

Any golfer travelling to play at a significantly different elevation from their home course benefits. This is especially relevant for players from sea-level regions visiting courses in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, Utah, or international destinations like Johannesburg (5,700 ft) or Bogotá (8,600 ft).

The percentage-based model is a reliable approximation used by instructors and club fitters, but it does not account for wind, temperature, humidity, or individual swing speed. For competitive tournament play, work with a certified club fitter or use a launch monitor to dial in precise distances.
