Frequently Asked Questions

What is the IPPT and who has to take it?

The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is a physical fitness test administered by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). It is compulsory for National Servicemen (NSmen) and active NSF personnel. The test measures fitness across three stations: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2.4km run.

How many points do you need to pass the IPPT?

You need a minimum of 51 points to achieve a Pass. Scoring 75 points or more earns a Silver award, and 85 points or more earns a Gold award. Each station contributes up to a maximum of 25 points (push-ups and sit-ups) and 50 points (2.4km run), totalling 100 points.

How is the IPPT score calculated?

Points are awarded for each of the three stations based on your age group and performance. Push-ups and sit-ups each carry up to 25 points, while the 2.4km run carries up to 50 points. The three station scores are summed to give your total IPPT score out of 100.

What happens if I fail the IPPT?

NSmen who fail IPPT are required to attend RT (Remedial Training) sessions to improve their fitness. You will also have additional IPPT attempts. Consistent failure may result in further mandatory training obligations. Passing IPPT avoids RT and may qualify you for financial incentives.

How do I qualify for IPPT incentives?

NSmen who achieve a Pass, Silver, or Gold award are eligible for monetary incentives. Gold earns the highest payout, followed by Silver, then Pass. The exact amounts are set by MINDEF and may vary by year, so check the official SAF or NS Portal for current figures.

Does the scoring differ by age group?

Yes. The IPPT uses age-adjusted scoring tables, so older participants are held to lower rep and timing benchmarks for the same number of points. This ensures the test remains a fair measure of fitness relative to age. Select your correct age group in the calculator for accurate results.

What is the difference between standard and Commando/Guards/Diver scoring?

Personnel in Commando, Guards, and Diver vocations are held to stricter performance standards with higher benchmarks required for the same number of points, reflecting the more demanding physical requirements of these roles.

What is a good 2.4km run time for IPPT?

For the 18–21 age group, a run time of around 9:44 or faster is needed for maximum points, while under 11:44 typically earns a pass. For older age groups the cut-offs are progressively more lenient. Consistently training for sub-11 minute runs puts most age groups in a solid passing position.
