MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task — a measure of exercise intensity relative to rest. A MET of 1 equals resting energy expenditure. Slow jogging (around 8 min/km) has a MET of roughly 6, while fast running (under 4 min/km) can reach a MET of 14 or higher. Multiplying MET by weight and time gives calories burned.

Is treadmill running the same as outdoor running for calories?

Treadmill running at the same pace burns slightly fewer calories because the belt assists leg turnover and there is no air resistance. Outdoors, wind resistance and terrain variation add to your effort. As a rough guide, setting a 1% incline on a treadmill approximates flat outdoor running energy cost.
