Do vitamin requirements change during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Yes, significantly. During pregnancy, requirements for vitamins such as Folate (to 600 mcg DFE), Vitamin D, B6, and B12 all increase to support fetal development. While breastfeeding, Vitamin A, C, and B12 needs also rise to support both the mother's health and breast milk quality. This calculator adjusts all recommendations automatically based on life stage.

What is the difference between fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins?

Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) are stored in the body's fatty tissues and liver, so they don't need to be consumed every day but can accumulate to toxic levels if over-consumed. Water-soluble vitamins (C and all B vitamins) are not stored in significant amounts and excess is excreted in urine, making regular dietary intake important and toxicity less common.
