Frequently Asked Questions

How are fantasy hockey points calculated for skaters?

Standard skater scoring awards 3 points per goal, 2 points per assist, 0.5 per shot on goal, 1 per plus/minus, and 0.5 per block. Power play and short-handed goals or assists each earn a 0.5 bonus, and shootout goals add 0.2 points. This calculator lets you adjust every value to match your league's settings.

How are fantasy points calculated for goaltenders?

Goaltenders earn 3 points per win, 0.2 per save, 2 per shutout, and lose 1 point for each goal allowed. These defaults match the scoring system used by major fantasy platforms, but you can customize each value in the Scoring Settings section.

What is the difference between a Points League and a Categories League in fantasy hockey?

In a Points League, each statistical category is assigned a numeric value and players earn fantasy points based on their totals. In a Categories League, teams compete head-to-head in individual stat categories (e.g., most goals, highest save percentage). This calculator is designed for Points Leagues.

Do power play goals and assists earn extra points?

Yes. In standard scoring, a power play goal earns the regular 3 points for the goal plus a 0.5 bonus, totaling 3.5 points. Similarly, a power play assist earns 2 points plus 0.5. The same bonus applies to short-handed goals and assists.

Can I customize the point values for my league?

Absolutely. The Scoring Settings section lets you adjust the point value for every category — goals, assists, shots, blocks, plus/minus, special teams bonuses, and all goalie stats. Enter your league's exact values and the calculator will update your total immediately.

Why do plus/minus points matter in fantasy hockey?

Plus/minus reflects a skater's on-ice impact during even-strength and short-handed situations. In fantasy, it rewards defensively responsible players and penalizes those who are frequently on the ice when goals are scored against their team. It adds an extra layer of strategy to player selection.

How many points does a goalie shutout earn in fantasy hockey?

A shutout typically earns 2 bonus points in standard fantasy scoring, on top of the win points (3) and save points earned during the game. A shutout with 30 saves would generate 3 (win) + 6 (saves × 0.2) + 2 (shutout) = 11 points using default values.

Are shootout goals worth the same as regular goals in fantasy hockey?

No. Shootout goals are scored separately and are usually worth much less — 0.2 points by default compared to 3 points for a regulation goal. This reflects the fact that shootout goals do not count toward a player's official NHL stats and are considered a tiebreaker format.
