Golf Score Differential Calculator

Enter your Adjusted Gross Score, Course Rating, Slope Rating, and Playing Conditions Adjustment to calculate your Score Differential — the key value used in WHS handicap computation. Supports both 18-hole and 9-hole rounds. Your result shows the score differential rounded to one decimal place, plus your estimated course handicap.

Your score after applying maximum hole score adjustments (net double bogey).

Standard par for the course (typically 70–72 for 18 holes).

The expected score for a scratch golfer on this course. Found on the scorecard.

Indicates course difficulty for bogey golfers relative to scratch. The standard slope is 113.

Playing Conditions Calculation adjustment applied by your golf club for the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Score Differential in golf?

A Score Differential is a numerical value that represents the performance of a golfer on a specific course on a specific day, adjusted for course difficulty. It is calculated using your Adjusted Gross Score, Course Rating, Slope Rating, and any Playing Conditions Adjustment. The result indicates what Handicap Index was effectively 'played to' during that round.

What is the formula for Score Differential?

The WHS formula is: Score Differential = (113 / Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating − Playing Conditions Adjustment). The result is rounded to one decimal place. For 9-hole rounds, the formula is the same but uses the 9-hole course rating and slope, and the differential must later be combined with another 9-hole differential to form an 18-hole equivalent.

What are Course Rating and Slope Rating?

Course Rating (CR) is the expected score for a scratch golfer (0 handicap) under normal conditions on a specific set of tees. Slope Rating (SR) reflects the relative difficulty of the course for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer — the standard slope is 113. Both values are printed on the scorecard for each set of tees.

What is the Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC)?

The Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) is a daily adjustment between -1 and +3 issued by your golf club or governing body when course conditions significantly differ from normal. A positive value means conditions were harder than usual (e.g. strong winds, firm greens), while -1 means conditions were easier. If no adjustment was issued, use 0.

How does a 9-hole Score Differential differ from an 18-hole one?

A 9-hole Score Differential is calculated using the 9-hole course rating and slope rating for the tees played. Because the WHS system is based on 18-hole equivalents, a 9-hole differential must be combined with another 9-hole differential (from the same or a subsequent round) before being added to your scoring record for Handicap Index calculation.

How many Score Differentials are used to calculate a Handicap Index?

Under the World Handicap System, your Handicap Index is calculated using the best 8 of your most recent 20 Score Differentials. If you have fewer than 20 rounds, a reduced number are used — for example, the best 1 from the first 3 rounds, the best 2 from 5 rounds, and so on. The average of those best differentials is multiplied by 0.96.

What is a good Score Differential?

A lower Score Differential indicates a better performance relative to the course difficulty. A differential near 0 means you played close to scratch level. Most recreational golfers will see differentials between 15 and 30. Elite amateurs and professionals typically post single-digit or negative differentials.

Can I use this calculator for official handicap submissions?

This calculator is an educational tool designed to help you understand and verify your Score Differential. For official handicap purposes, scores must be submitted through your golf club's authorised handicap system (such as Golf Australia's GolfLink, England Golf's MyEG, or USGA's GHIN). Always confirm your official differentials with your club.
