What does 'equivalent pitch speed' mean?

Equivalent pitch speed is the speed at a different mound distance that gives the batter the exact same reaction time as your original pitch. For example, a 70 mph pitch from 46 feet gives the batter about the same time to react as a 92 mph pitch from 60.5 feet — so they are 'equivalent' in difficulty, even though the raw numbers look very different.

How is the converted speed calculated?

The calculation uses the relationship between speed, distance, and time. Reaction time = distance ÷ speed (in consistent units). The equivalent speed at the new distance is then: (target distance ÷ source distance) × original speed. This preserves the same time-to-plate for the batter.
