Frequently Asked Questions

How many matches are played in a round robin tournament?

In a single round robin with N teams, the total number of matches is N × (N − 1) / 2. For example, 8 teams produce 28 matches. In a double round robin (home and away), you double that figure to N × (N − 1).

How many rounds does a round robin tournament take?

For N teams, a single round robin requires N − 1 rounds if N is even, or N rounds if N is odd. Each round has ⌊N/2⌋ simultaneous matches. The calculator shows rounds per pool based on your team and pool settings.

What is the difference between a single and double round robin?

In a single round robin, every team plays every other team exactly once. In a double round robin, each pair plays twice — once as host and once as visitor. Double round robins are common in leagues where home-field advantage matters.

How does splitting teams into pools affect the schedule?

When you use multiple pools, teams only play opponents within their own pool. This reduces the total matches per team and shortens the tournament, but requires a playoff stage to determine an overall winner across pools.

What happens when the number of teams is odd?

When there is an odd number of teams in a pool, one team receives a 'bye' (sits out) each round. The total rounds needed increases by one compared to an even-numbered pool of similar size.

How many venues or locations do I need for a round robin tournament?

You need at least ⌊N/2⌋ simultaneous playing areas per round. More venues allow more concurrent games, reducing the total time needed to complete the tournament. The calculator estimates days based on your venues and games-per-day inputs.

Can I use this calculator for any sport?

Yes. The round robin format applies to soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis, cricket, esports, and any competitive activity. The calculator focuses on scheduling logic — just enter team count and pools regardless of sport.

What is the fairest way to assign teams to pools?

Random assignment (seeding draw) is the most common fair method. Alternatively, seeded pools place strong teams in separate pools to balance competition. The calculator supports any assignment — you choose the method that suits your event.
