Frequently Asked Questions

How is winning percentage calculated with ties?

When ties are involved, the formula is: PCT = (Wins + 0.5 × Ties) / Total Games. A tie counts as half a win. For example, 27 wins, 17 losses, and 6 ties over 50 games gives a PCT of (27 + 3) / 50 = 0.600.

How is winning percentage calculated without ties?

Simply divide your wins by the total number of games played: PCT = Wins / (Wins + Losses). A team that wins 48 of 82 games has a winning percentage of 0.585.

What does a .500 winning percentage mean?

A .500 winning percentage means a team has won exactly half of its games — wins and losses are equal. It is the dividing line between a winning and a losing season.

How do I calculate Games Back (GB)?

Games Back measures how far behind the first-place team you are. The formula is: GB = ((Leader Wins − Your Wins) + (Your Losses − Leader Losses)) / 2. A GB of 0 means you are tied for first place.

What is the win/loss ratio?

The win/loss ratio is simply Wins divided by Losses. A ratio of 2.0 means the team wins twice as many games as it loses. It is different from winning percentage, which is expressed relative to total games played.

How many wins do you need for a .600 winning percentage over 162 games?

You need at least 98 wins (97.2 rounded up) to achieve a .600 PCT over a 162-game MLB season. Multiply 162 × 0.600 = 97.2, so 98 wins are required.

Does this calculator work for all sports?

Yes. The formula works for any sport — baseball, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, and more. For sports without ties (like NBA basketball), simply leave the Ties field at 0 and the calculator uses the standard Wins / Total Games formula.

How do I calculate what percentage of games a team won if they won 40% of 15 games?

Multiply 15 × 0.40 = 6 wins. To verify, divide 6 / 15 = 0.400, confirming a 40% winning percentage. You can also use this calculator by entering 6 wins and 9 losses.
