Shot conversion rate (also called shooting percentage) measures how often a player or team turns shots into goals. It is expressed as a percentage — for example, a 20% conversion rate means 1 in every 5 shots results in a goal.
Divide the number of goals scored by the total number of shots taken, then multiply by 100. The formula is: Conversion Rate (%) = (Goals ÷ Shots) × 100. For example, 8 goals from 30 shots gives a conversion rate of 26.67%.
It depends on the context. Many analysts exclude shots that were blocked before they were properly released. For standard shooting percentage calculations, only shots that were fully attempted (including those on target, off target, and blocked after release) are typically counted.
For professional players, a conversion rate between 10% and 20% is considered solid. Elite forwards like top-tier strikers can average above 20%. Teams generally average around 10–15% across a full season.
