Frequently Asked Questions

How is the USATT table tennis rating calculated?

USATT uses an Elo-based rating system. Your expected score is calculated based on the rating difference between you and your opponent. After the match, your rating is adjusted based on whether your actual result (win or loss) was higher or lower than the expected score, multiplied by a K-factor that depends on the number of games played.

What is the K-factor in table tennis rating?

The K-factor determines the maximum number of rating points you can gain or lose in a single match. In the USATT system, the K-factor scales with the number of games played in a match — more games means more points at stake. Typically, K is set to 8 per game for adults in the standard formula.

Can I gain rating points even if I lose?

No — you can only gain rating points from a win. However, the amount you lose from a defeat depends on how much weaker your opponent is rated compared to you. If your opponent is rated much higher than you, losing costs very few points because the expected score already favors them.

How many points do I gain for beating a higher-rated player?

The greater the rating difference between you and a stronger opponent, the more points you earn by beating them. For example, defeating someone rated 200 points above you will yield significantly more points than beating someone of equal rating, because the expected probability of you winning was low.

What is the minimum and maximum USATT rating?

USATT ratings generally start around 100 for brand-new players and can exceed 2700 for elite players. Most recreational players fall in the 500–1500 range, intermediate club players 1500–2000, and competitive tournament players 2000 and above.

Does the number of games in a match affect the rating change?

Yes. In the USATT system, rating points are calculated per game within a match. A best-of-5 match therefore puts more rating points at stake than a single-game match. Winning more games means a larger potential rating gain.

How often is a USATT rating updated?

USATT ratings are updated after sanctioned tournament results are reported and processed, which typically happens within a few days to a week after a tournament. Ratings do not update after casual or practice matches — only officially sanctioned events count.

Is this calculator official or an estimate?

This calculator is an estimate based on the publicly documented USATT Elo-based rating formula. Actual USATT rating changes are processed by the official USATT system and may differ slightly due to additional rules, provisional ratings for new players, or system-specific adjustments.
