Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Break Time Calculator work?

Enter your shift start and end times along with the duration of each break. The calculator subtracts your total break time from the gross shift length to give you net hours worked. If you enter an hourly rate, it also estimates your pay for those net hours.

Can I enter more than one break per shift?

Yes — the calculator supports up to three separate breaks. Enter the hours and minutes for each break individually. All break durations are summed and deducted from your gross shift time to produce accurate net working hours.

What is the difference between gross shift duration and net hours worked?

Gross shift duration is the total time from your shift start to your shift end, including any breaks. Net hours worked is what remains after all break time has been deducted — this is the figure typically used for payroll purposes.

Does this calculator handle overnight or midnight-crossing shifts?

Yes. If your end time is earlier than your start time, the calculator automatically assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours to the end time before computing the duration. For example, a shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM will correctly calculate as 8 hours.

How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?

Take the decimal portion of the hours value and multiply it by 60 to get minutes. For example, 7.75 hours equals 7 hours and 45 minutes (0.75 × 60 = 45). The calculator displays both the decimal and hh:mm formats for your convenience.

Is the hourly rate field required?

No, the hourly rate field is completely optional. The calculator will compute all time-based results whether or not you enter a rate. Fill it in only if you want to see an estimated earnings figure alongside your working hours.

What should I enter if I have no breaks during my shift?

Simply leave all break fields at zero. The calculator will treat the entire shift as working time, and net hours worked will equal the gross shift duration.

Can I use this calculator for weekly timesheet totals?

This calculator is designed for a single shift. To calculate weekly totals, run it for each day individually and add the resulting net hours together. Many payroll platforms and timesheet apps can then use those daily figures to produce a weekly summary.
